1970 F1 World Champion:

Jochen Rindt – Team Lotus

Fact: Jochen Rindt was the first World Champion of the 1970s but also the first and only driver to win the championship posthumously. He died in a practice session at Monza.

1971 F1 World Champion:

Jackie Stewart – Tyrrell

Fact: Jackie Stewart won his 2nd World Championship in 1971 for Tyrrell. It was the first win for Tyrrell constructing their own cars.

1972 F1 World Champion:

Emerson Fittipaldi – Team Lotus

Fact: Emerson Fittipaldi won his first World Championship in 1972 for Team Lotus and became the youngest Formula One champion at the time.

1973 F1 World Champion:

Jackie Stewart – Tyrrell

Fact: This was to be Jackie Stewart’s final F1 World Championship and he also retired from F1 that year.

1974 F1 World Champion:

Emerson Fittipaldi – McLaren

Fact: This was to be Emerson Fittipaldi’s final F1 World Championship, he left McLaren the following year to drive for his brothers F1 team.

1975 F1 World Champion:

Niki Lauda – Ferrari

Fact: Niki Lauda won his first World Championship in 1975 for Ferrari. It was the first F1 title in the 70s for Ferrari and its first in 11 years since John Surtees won one in 1964.

1976 F1 World Champion:

James Hunt – McLaren

Fact: James Hunt won his first and only World Championship in 1976 for McLaren. It was a very close battle that year with Niki Lauda and is the subject of the Film Rush.

1977 F1 World Champion:

Niki Lauda – Ferrari

Fact: Niki Lauda won his second World Championship in 1977 for Ferrari. He won less races than Mario Andretti who won 4 races in the Lotus.

1978 F1 World Champion:

Mario Andretti – Team Lotus

Fact: Mario Andretti won his first and only World Championship in 1978 for Team Lotus. He remains the last american to win an Formula One Championship.

1979 F1 World Champion:

Jody Scheckter – Ferrari

Fact: Jody Scheckter won his first and only World Championship in 1979 for Ferrari. After only scoring 2 points in the 1980 season Scheckter retired from F1 and Motor racing.
